Ο φετινός Ιούλιος θα μείνει χαραγμένος στις καρδιές όλων μας, καθώς το νησί μας δοκιμάστηκε από μία πρωτόγνωρη φυσική καταστροφή.

Η φωτιά που ξέσπασε προκάλεσε τεράστιες υλικές ζημιές, ενώ και ο χαρακτήρας του φυσικού τοπίου, δυστυχώς, δεν θα είναι ποτέ ο ίδιος. Πολλοί άνθρωποι είδαν τις περιουσίες τους να χάνονται από τη μία στιγμή στην άλλη, ενώ ένας μεγάλος αριθμός επισκεπτών του νησιού αναγκάστηκε να διακόψει τις διακοπές του και να φιλοξενηθεί σε ειδικά διαμορφωμένες δομές, για να αντιμετωπίσει αυτή την έκτακτη συνθήκη.

Κι αν διαβάζοντας κανείς τα παραπάνω, αισθάνεται δυσάρεστα συναισθήματα να τον κατακλύζουν – ακόμα και απελπισία ίσως, ας δούμε και την ενθαρρυντική πλευρά των πραγμάτων, αυτή που μας δίνει την ορμή να συνεχίσουμε και μας κάνει να ελπίζουμε για το αύριο. Και δεν είναι τίποτα άλλο πέρα από τη δύναμη του εθελοντισμού. Όλοι οι κάτοικοι αυτού του νησιού, σε συνεργασία με τους αρμόδιους φορείς, έκαναν ό,τι περνούσε από το χέρι τους, για να βοηθήσουν στο βαθμό του εφικτού όλους τους συμπολίτες τους και τους επισκέπτες του νησιού. Άλλοι προσέφεραν τρόφιμα και είδη πρώτης ανάγκης, άλλοι ξενύχτησαν στις δομές φιλοξενίας παρέχοντας υλική και ηθική υποστήριξη, άλλοι άνοιξαν τα σπίτια τους σε επισκέπτες που αντιμετώπιζαν και άλλου είδους σοβαρά προβλήματα. Αυτό που είναι το μόνο σίγουρο είναι ότι όλοι ανεξαιρέτως άνοιξαν τις καρδιές τους…

Στην προσπάθειες αυτές, δεν θα μπορούσε να μη συνδράμει και το δικό μας σχολείο. Από τα ξημερώματα του Σαββάτου 22 Ιουλίου άνοιξε τις πόρτες του, για να φιλοξενήσει έναν τεράστιο αριθμό επισκεπτών που έντρομοι εγκατέλειπαν τα καταλύματά τους ή έρχονταν απ΄ευθείας από το αεροδρόμιο. Το κύμα αλληλεγγύης που πλημμύρισε το σχολείο μας ήταν πρωτόγνωρο. Εκπαιδευτικοί, γονείς, νέοι και παλιοί μαθητές και μαθήτριες, μα και απλοί άνθρωποι κάθε ηλικίας έκαναν ό,τι μπορούσαν, για να βοηθήσουν ανθρώπους που μέχρι χθες τους ήταν άγνωστοι.

Η συγκίνηση των όλων αυτών που βρέθηκαν στο νησί μας σε μια τόσο δύσκολη στιγμή ήταν μεγάλη. Το ίδιο όμως κι η ευγνωμοσύνη τους. Η Lucinda Ward, η Susan Brown, οι Mark and Samantha Evans, η  Karen Stocker είναι μόνο μερικοί από τους επισκέπτες αυτούς που ένιωσαν την ανάγκη να ευχαριστήσουν με επιστολές που απέστειλαν στο σχολείο μας όλο αυτόν τον κόσμο που άφησε την καθημερινότητά του, για να απαλύνει τον φόβο αλλά και την ανασφάλεια που ένιωσαν αυτοί οι άνθρωποι. Θέλησαν να εκφράσουν, με αυτό τον τρόπο, την αγάπη τους σε όλους μας, αλλά και να τονίσουν ότι δεν θα ξεχάσουν ποτέ τη φροντίδα και την αλληλεγγύη που έδειξε απέναντι τους όλο το νησί της Ρόδου. Πόσο συγκινητικό, μάλιστα, που πολλοί από αυτούς δεν δίστασαν να δηλώσουν να ξεκάθαρα την επιθυμία να προσφέρουν και έμπρακτα στο σχολείο μας σε μία προσπάθεια να ευχαριστήσουν κυρίως – όπως λένε – τα παιδιά μας!Με τη σειρά μας κι εμείς, όσοι αποτελούμε το 4ο ΓΕ.Λ. Ρόδου θέλουμε να πούμε ότι είμαστε ιδιαίτερα υπερήφανοι για όλο το δυναμικό του σχολείου μας αλλά κυρίως για τους γονείς και τα παιδιά αυτού του σχολείου που για άλλη μία φορά απέδειξαν ότι είναι πρώτα από όλα εξαιρετικοί άνθρωποι. Αυτή η σκέψη μάς κάνει να ατενίζουμε το μέλλον με αισιοδοξία και να σκεφτόμαστε ότι, ακόμα κι αν κάποιες στιγμές όλα φαντάζουν μαύρα, με αυτά τα παιδιά στο τιμόνι μπορούμε να αλλάξουμε τον κόσμο! Και πάλι σας ευχαριστούμε για αυτό που είστε!

thankfully went ahead, because of your support and care, on 27/07/23 at St Pauls, Lindos.

“Many of these people have lost something to the fires whether it be their homes, belongings, businesses or livelihoods. Many were unsure of the safety of their own loved ones, as they fought and continue to fight against the wildfires in Rhodes. Dspite this they volunteered to help us out of the pure kindness of their hearts and have provided more guidance reassurance and assistance than TUI has, over the past 3 days. May of the locals bought food, water, toiletries, mattresses (the list could go on forever) from their own pockets and some even welcomed evacuated tourists into their homes for showers, cooked meals and a bed to sleep in. I couldn’t and still can’t thank them all enough for the huge role they’ve played in making everyone feel safe and comfortable in such tragic circumstances. Without the locals these past 3 days would have been unbearable. The help they gave, big or small, can’t go unnoticed. In my eyes they epitomize the term “not all heroes were capes” and each and every one of these people deserve the absolute world and more. Although I may never see them again, I will always remember their selflessness, charity generosity and genuine kindness, for the rest of my life. This truly was a humbling experience and a reminder that there are still good people amongst all the bad in this world. And it just goes to show that you never know what’s round the corner. Living in the moment is so precious. Thank you again to everyone that looked after us, you are all truly amazing. I will forever be grateful.
